# Documentation

## Pick your Shoal

Shoal is one engine with three ways in. The concepts, the commands, and the models are the same in all of them, so choosing here only changes which install steps, which keys, and which menu these pages show you. You can change it any time from the top of the contents.

- [Terminal](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/terminal/install): One binary in any shell. Output goes to your terminal's own scrollback, and you can steer a turn while it runs.
- [VS Code](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/vscode/install): A panel in the editor, speaking to the same engine. Ask about a selection from the context menu.
- [Desktop](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/desktop/install): Its own window, no terminal needed once installed. The Start Menu entry points straight at it.

## What is here

**Start**: [What Shoal is](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/start/what-is-shoal) · [Install](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/terminal/install) · [First run](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/terminal/first-run) · [Moor your first model](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/start/moor-a-model)

**Reference**: [Commands](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/reference/commands) · [Slash commands](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/reference/slash-commands) · [Keyboard](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/reference/keyboard) · [Configuration](https://shoal.grimvane.ai/docs/reference/configuration)

## The reference comes from the binary

Everything in the reference is generated from the program. Commands, flags, defaults, the slash menus, the keys, and the editor's settings are read out of the binary and its clients at version 0.32.0, so the reference matches what runs on your machine.
